How it works

From groups to the final, explained

Every category plays the same two stages: a round robin in small groups, then a knockout bracket for the best teams. Here is one tournament followed the whole way through — 16 teams, 4 groups.

  1. Step 1 of 5

    Teams are split into groups

Teams are ranked into seeds (1 is the strongest), then spread across the groups so the top seeds start apart. Seeds 1, 2, 3 and 4 each lead a different group — nobody gets stuck in a group of favourites.

    Group C

    Seeds 4, 7, 12, 15

    Group D

    Seeds 3, 8, 11, 16

Top 4 seeds — one in every group

  2. Step 2 of 5

Everyone plays everyone in their group

Each group is a round robin: every team plays every other team once. When the last group match is done, the top 2 of each group go through to the finals.

Top 2 go to the finals as A1 and A2

  3. Step 3 of 5

Ties are broken fairly, in order

If teams finish level, we go down this list until one check separates them. No coin flips: the same results always give the same order, and standings update live after every score.

    If teams are level, check…
    1. 1Most match winsThe simple one — who won more.
    2. 2Head-to-headAmong the tied teams only, who beat whom.
    3. 3Most sets wonCounts every game you took.
    4. 4Point differentialPoints won minus points lost.
    5. 5Most points scoredThe last numbers-based check.

Still level? The team that won their match ranks higher.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Winners cross over

Each group winner plays the runner-up of the mirror group: A1 meets the last group's runner-up, B1 the second-to-last, and so on. The pairings are set by the groups, so everyone knows who they could face before the first serve.

    Winners vs. runners-up
    1. A1Group A winnerD2Group D 2nd
    2. B1Group B winnerC2Group C 2nd
    3. C1Group C winnerB2Group B 2nd
    4. D1Group D winnerA2Group A 2nd

    A plays D, B plays C — first group against last, inward.

  5. Step 5 of 5

The bracket is drawn — no instant rematches

A group's winner and runner-up start in opposite halves of the bracket, so two teams that met in the group stage can only meet again in the final. Lose once and you're out; the semifinal losers play for third.

Good to know

  • No byes, ever

Categories play in 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 groups, so every qualifier has an opponent in round one.

  • Never a coin flip

Every tie-break is decided by results. Redrawing the bracket gives the exact same draw.

  • A match for bronze

The two semifinal losers play once more, so third place is earned on court.
